Backyard Fence

Spring is coming and we are all home with COVID-19. There are multiple projects to the home that are still pending and now is a perfect time to tackle them.

The back garage that was built in the early 1900's ~ has come down to house 2 cars.  For now 1 wall is remaining because it's retaining the difference of the neighbors backyard. That was week 1 and 2.

Next we tackle the fence and update the color.

Gray metal sheeting was used on the new addition leading out to the backyard.  The front of the house is dark gray and I think it's best to continue the color palette outside.  It's also very sophisticated.

Here are options.
 DARK FENCE

 DARK FENCE

LIGHT FENCE

LIGHT FENCE

We are in agreement that we like the dark fence and maybe stain the patio concrete a light gray.

COLORS

The greenery pops wonderfully against the dark gray.

I like the look of stain ~ the grains aren't heavily hidden under thick paint. The #376 is the slate stain.

This is a blend of the black window frames and the gray of the siding.

I'm thinking the old color is actually stain and not paint because the grain is still showing.  Can we stain over it?

A transparent stain (without any color) will last maybe two years.
A semi-transparent stain lasts 2-3 years.
And then when you don’t maintain that and your fence gets discolored, you might get a solid stain which lasts 5 years if it’s an alkyd (oil based) and 3 years if it’s a latex.

A before and after using the same Stain.
This stain seems to be a popular winner.

More Visuals Below.   They are closer to a black tone than a gray tone ~ it depends how the light is hitting it.
