~ Attempting kitchen trends for 2019

VINTAGE VIBE

Kitchen backslashes no longer simply protect walls from spills and splatters, a wide array of eye-catching materials like glass, wood, metals and stone make the backsplash the focal point of today's kitchens.

Penny rounds have emerged as fresh design material today. Originally sold in face-mounted paper sheets and set into a sand-and-cement mortar that also served as the grout, easy-to-clean unglazed porcelain circles debuted in bathrooms and kitchens in the early 1900s.

10.50 sq ft

There are several reasons I'm thinking penny tile versus Carrera marble tiles ~ in any shape or form ~ since we are doing our own labor on the backsplash ~ this will be much easier to cut and assemble.  Another reason is the price of $10.50 a sq ft.

SQUARE TILE instead of SUBWAY to create the vintage feel for this 1890 Row House.

another way to change up for 2019 look.
Yet another trend is mixing up the metals ~ here is a gold faucet with silver handles.
Also note the floating shelves and the black windows.

MY FAVORITE

Calacatta Gold 6x18 Polished Italian Marble Tile
$28.95 SQ FT
White and gray cabinets with gold hardware and black accents - every color is in this marble.

WHITE KITCHENS ARE OVER ~ or at least all white.

We are closing the door on the all white look ~ So were doing gray bottoms with white uppers.

Sink faucets with only 1 handle/sprayer are also this years trend.

I like the black faucet with the gold handles.  The 2 tone herringbone pattern is interesting but I think busy for a small room and difficult to apply.  Notice the black counter and the stainless sink.

We have a problem with our white cabinets ~ they are antique white ~ so many of the white subway tiles don't match.  When I did my own house - I matched the color of the subway tiles to create the paint for the cabinets ~ swiss coffee.

So instead of subway tile we are using a small marble tile that blends the white and gray.
American Orlean 889674 @ $9.99 sq ft.  We save money so we can have a better quartz counter top.

OPEN SHELVING
BLACK is the color for 2019.  So introducing some forged iron shelves in the kitchen will create a vibe that is elegant and edgy.

GETTING RID OF UPPER CABINETS
The look is going away from Traditional to a clean, open and uncluttered design.  By eliminating the uppers the trend can materializes.  However, what about storage?

INSTEAD large storage walls are created.  Note how narrow they are.

THE USE OF WOOD
The usable space in the kitchen is only 10 x 10 so it's difficult to introduce wood cabinetry.  But we can use it for our flooring as we extend the entire 1st floor with warm weathered hand scraped planks.

RAW MATERIALS
In 2019, modern kitchen design will be about going to back to basics. Kitchens are being pared down to allow raw materials to shine on their own. Think wood, stone, shiplap, and jute.

Find 2 large baskets to hang over the 65" peninsula.

X-Large Edison light bulb

What caught my eye is not just the wicker shade - but the coloring on the brick.  It's a light wash with some gray tones added.

STATEMENT LIGHTING FIXTURES
As islands and peninsulas have become mainstays in kitchens renovations, so have stand-out light fixtures to hang above them. Whether a chandelier or a more classic sconce, including a dramatic source, immediately makes a kitchen more intimate.
