Window and Door Casings

These windows were on my wish list.  They're frameless with a wood inset.  If you're going to do these ~ your drywall has to be altered.

1. As I go thru countless photos of contemporary and updated homes with these windows  ~ I 'm not seeing draperies or window treatments.   Of course, WHY would you want to cover up the beautiful wood?

2. And while we are speaking of wood ~ I also notice they are stained in a pine coloration.  Our floors are very different.

3. I would say in 98% of the photos ~ they are also done with black framed windows in keeping with the modern design.  We have white windows.  Now above, they have the white window.

Here's another problem - our master already has window frames. But, I'm not sure of the condition.  And they seem to be flat and simple.

SIZES OF MOLDING

While your choice of moulding style is a personal one, the size of the room and the height of the ceiling in the room play an important role in making moulding decisions. Lowe’s suggests you consider the following recommendations as a minimum size range to use based in particular to ceiling height.

This chart is from Lowe's but I'm disregarding it.  Since we are not doing crown molding ~ I'd like to beef up our baseboards to 7" ~ but keep them simple in design.

Most trim pieces graduate in 1/4-inch increments. Standard door and window trim is typically 2 1/4 inches in width, baseboard is about 3 inches, and crown is about 4 1/2 inches. Standard measurements typically vary 1/16 inch or more.

DOOR CASINGS OPTIONS

EXPENSIVE - each pack only fits one side of a door.

$34.97 for prepack
Polystyrene

Polystyrene
Polystyrene prefinished moulding is lightweight and simple to cut using conventional saws, making installation a one-person job. These mouldings can be installed with construction adhesive or finishing nails and are slightly flexible, making them perfect for walls that aren’t true. They’re also moisture resistant—an ideal solution for kitchens and bathrooms.

MDF
Pros: A composite material made from sawdust and resins, ultralight medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a stable and low-cost alternative to solid wood. It comes in a wide range of stock profiles, some with a natural wood veneer suitable for staining.

Cons: Without veneers, MDF must be painted; cutting and installing poses the same challenges as solid wood, plus ultralight MDF is easier to dent or nick.
It's best to paint with oil base primer because water base will make it swell.
If you have a long run it's difficult to maneuver alone ~ it will flop around and bend ~ making it easy to break.

Casings on our Budget from Lowe's and Home Depot.

HOME DEPOT   #356    $4.62 ea

Home Depot  #366   $4.11 ea

Primed Finger Joint
Primed Finger Joint Products are available in Pine and Poplar wood. This engineered moulding is made by fitting smaller pieces together to create one long board. Finger Joint moulding looks best when painted.

My wish list ~ clean lines.

Mitered corners

I like the one below for several reasons.  It's a primed finger joint and the clean lines.

HOME DEPOT    #623   $4.33 ea

LOWES  (12.05 ea.)

FOR THE BATHROOMS - polystyrene
MDF can expand and swell with moisture so it's not best in the bathroom.  If you use MDF - you need to prime with an oil base primer - not water base for the same reason.
We only have 2 small bathrooms ~ so not much will be needed.
