LIGHTING SELECTION IN THE HOUSE
As a rule of thumb, pendants are usually suspended anywhere between 28-36 inches above the target surface, around 60-70 inches from the bottom of the shade to the floor, and when hanging multiple pendant lights, pendants should be 24-30 inches apart.
I’ve been working with my son for the last 9 months refurbishing a 1890’s Row House in Pittsburgh. Many of these pages are for our reference. Daily, I search the internet and place our finds and thoughts here to communicate to each other. Our other way of communicating is via What’s App ~ we can sit and write to each other and throw information back and forth quickly. Hopefully, some of this will help you too.
CEILING HEIGHT = 103"
Bar height is 42" , so we have 61" to the ceiling.
Bar height is 42" , so we have 61" to the ceiling.
Here's a quick sketch so we know how large to make the pendants.
We won't be able to get 30" between the fixtures - so I'm trying for 24. That's the minimum we can do because they are directly in front of the kitchen sink and line of sight to the living room.
If the pendants are glass - they'll give more light - but they won't make a strong statement.
If they're glass - it's best they are frosted because the bulb will be too bright at eye level... Unless you use an Edison bulb ~ but you won't get a large amount of task lighting.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Anything fixture with a 16" height or below is good. It leaves enough chain.
I prefer to use the 26" between the bar top and the fixture ~ because the counter is 6" lower.
It's now at 32" above the counter.
It should be about 36".
We can raise it another 4" if needed ~ to be out of the line of vision into the living room.
----------------------------------------------------------------
So here's my dilemma - do I even use pendants. It's a 65" island.

After all said and done.... I am in ah of these. Last weekend when I was in Colorado ~ at a fantastic home accessory store ~ there were using multiples of these in turquoise glass threw out. What a eye catching statement. And I was also amazed I found them on Amazon for such a good price.

The foyer is usually one’s first impression of your home. To determine the size of chandelier, add the length and width (sq. feet) of the foyer and convert to inches. [For example – a 10 by 12 foot foyer would require a 22 inch wide fixture].
The ceilings are 120" high. Ideally, a foyer chandelier should hang about 7 feet off the floor for ceilings measuring 10 feet.
That leaves us 36" for the entry chandelier. The fixture is 20" tall ~ so the drop is 16".
Kit is needed to hot wire. $12.99
THEY DO NOT SHIP ~ and there is no store near you ~ World Market.
I would have to drive them up.

The vanity is 24" wide and the light fixture is 17". That will leave 3.5" on either side of the vanity. My thought is - is this too much for the small space?
MAX 40 watt.
If we didn't do the overhead - we could do a side by side like above. Then there is a light by the toilet ~ but the room is so small ~ I don't think it'll matter.

This is one of my favorites. You have the black industrial mixed with a little bling.
Joanna Gaines has used this.
- Fixture: 13.4" Diameter x 16.3" H;
- shade: 13.4" Diameter x 8.3" H;
- ceiling cap: 5.1" Diameter x 1.2 " H.
- (19" chain from ceiling)
- Overstock $108 with coupon each
This would also look nice on the hallway landing

MASTER BEDROOM SCONCES
Here's the scoop on bedside scones. With our industrial design we're anticipating a black swing arm ~ but what light will it give? Most only allow a 60 watt bulb ~ that's not bright enough and it's less with a solid case blocking the light.
On the other hand ~ you don't want a bare bulb either ~ can you imagine in bed reading with a bare bulb light next to you?
What we use the most in any home is a lamp with a shade ~ so my belief is to have a shaded sconce ~ even though it's not the 'trendy' thing we were hoping for ~ but why not ~ and try for something a little mid century mod.
I'm also looking for hot wired, dimmable, and under $125 each. We need a pair.
I have 2 favorites here.
